COLUMBIA – A funeral service for Demetrio Peji Matienzo, 84, will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 30, 2024 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Northeast Chapel, with burial in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, October 29, 2024, at the funeral home.
Mr. Matienzo died Saturday, October 19, 2024. Born in Mendez Cavite, Philippines, he was the son of the late Julian Matienzo and Francisca Matienzo. He was a graduate of Phillips Junior College of Charleston. Following his service in the US Navy, he worked in civil service and as a courier for Charleston County. Demetrio was a member of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra Chorus and a member of Saint Philip Neri Catholic Church in Fort Mill, SC.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Mercedes Matienzo; sons, Dean Mark Matienzo (Anne) and Alan Matthew Matienzo; granddaughters, Emily Matienzo and Allison Matienzo; and sister, Nieves Croox-Bautista.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Saint Philip Neri Catholic Church, 292 Munn Road East Fort Mill, SC 29715, or to a military organization supporting veterans.
