A breakdown by zip code shows Fort Mill has at least 18 positive COVID-19 cases, the second highest in York County.

That is from zip code 29715.

DHEC’s information on Friday included numbers by zip code after Governor Henry McMaster ordered the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control to publish the number of positive COVID-19 cases associated with each county ZIP code. The reversal came after criticism from state lawmakers as well as residents and reporters.

McMaster said the information is in the public’s interest.

“It is my hope this disclosure will reinforce to South Carolinians the seriousness and dire necessity of staying home to prevent the spread of #covid19,” McMaster tweeted.

In York County, DHEC is reporting 73 total cases. Only zip code 29732 has more cases than Fort Mill with 21. That zip code comprises portions of Rock Hill, India Hook, Newport and Wintercrest, according to online records.

DHEC officials are working to develop estimated cases by ZIP code and anticipates having that data available by Monday. Those estimated counts will represent those who are potentially undiagnosed.

“By including estimates, we hope to better convey more meaningful information about the risk of disease spread in our community,” a press release says. “We encourage everyone to continue to take action to protect themselves and those they love.”

On Friday, DHEC reported 147 additional cases of COVID-19 in the entire state. As of today, the total number statewide is 1,700 cases in all 46 counties.
