Several elementary schools in Fort Mill held Battle of the Books competitions in November, culminating in the first-ever “Battle Between the Schools” contest last week.

A parent from Orchard Park Elementary School sent us a few photos and this summary:

“On Friday, November 15th, Orchard Park Elementary School held its 4th annual Battle of the Books Competition, with 80 students participating. That same day, three other FMSD elementary schools held their FIRST Battle of the Books competitions.  Those 3 other elementary schools were Doby’s Bridge, Tega Cay, and Fort Mill.

“A few days later, on Wednesday, November 20th,  OPES, DBES, and TCES sent their top 2 Battle teams to OPES for the first ever Battle Between the Schools.  It was a tight competition with Tega Cay’s Word Tacos winning first place, and Orchard Park’s Toxic Texts finishing in second place.

“Battle of the Books is a reading competition intended to build excitement around reading, encourage students to read texts they would not have otherwise read, and build teamwork and sportsmanship.  The students had a list of 24 books to read over the course of see real months.   Then during the battle, the students work together to answer questions about those 24 books.”
