Officials from five agencies converged on the Catawba River on Tuesday night to rescue two men whose boat had become submerged, stranding them on an island near the Fort Mill Access.

The men, whose names were not released, were using a small fishing boat that took on water Tuesday night, said Chuck Haynes, director of the York County Office of Emergency Management.

“It was submerged to the point it could not make it back to the boat landing,” he said.

Officials with his office joined the Tega Cay Fire Department, York County Sheriff’s Office, Carolina Dive & Rescue, and the Tega Cay Police Department in responding. The responders were able to get the two individuals from the island and assist them in getting their boat floating and back to shore, Haynes said.
